I have a 1985 Astroglass 165 bass boat and will be replacing the motor on it soon. I am wanting a 60 hp motor for it and wondered if the boat would be to much for the motor. Not sure of the weight of the boat and I know there won't be any speed to it. But will the boat plane out? Thanks, Dave

Re: Down sizing motor

Since we are talking about a 16-1/2 foot bass boat, I'd say 60 hp would get the job done as long as you realize you aren't going to be winning any races. If you are using it like most bass boats are used, you will be alone or have one other person in it most of the time. Not heavily loaded in other words. My father in law used to have a 16 foot bayliner with a 40 hp. that was a bit underpowered but would have been fine with 60 hp.

The motor will move it the question is how much speed you want out of it. A local lake has a 10 HP restriction and I see 18ft bass boats with 9.9 kickers mounted all the time. Several of the homes on the lake have pontoons with 9.9's as the only engine. Personally I think as a fast paced society we have got caught up in speed. A slower motor will alow you more time to take in the scenry around you.

What is the current motor and what HP is the hull rated for?

Depends entirely on where and how you boat. A 9.9 on a pontoon can be dangerous if you are on a decent sized lake. Wind comes up, and you don't have enough to maintain control, let alone make any headway into the wind.

I have to admit that under certain conditions it can be dangerous. The lake I am refering to is a small lake and with the restriction you of course have no choice, you either use a 10hp or no motor at all.

Geez guys.. He is talking about a 16-1/2 foot bass boat. A 60 will surely push it around just fine. It won't go 70 mph like a lot of the bass boats out there, but it will run around just fine. Below is an example of a 17-1/2 foot procraft fiberglass bass boat with a 50 hp on it. BTW didn't astroglass become procraft.

^^^^^ agreed ^^^^^

A 60 will move you fine. As said, you won't impress anyone with speed - but you can probably show off your gas receipts! We used to run a 15' bowrider on a 65 HP and it would pull two skiers behind it with 3 in the boat. Unless you go WAAAAAAYYYYYY over the creel limit on your lake, you shouldn't be pulling that much weight around.

Hope you catch enough fish to test that out though.
