Just spent 15 min typing detailed explaination of problem, hit "submit" post dissapeared and I was logged out ! Damn !!
Short version : 1992 430B, DP-C, pivot pins frozen in place. They are threaded on the i.d. (for puller ?)
I've done all the searches, etc, etc for three F'n days with noo results for this drive .
No, they wont budge, Ive tried homemade puller, hammer & brass punch, slide hammer,.
Any one know the secret for removing these ?
TIA
Ted

Re: DP-C: can't get pivot pins out.

Sounds like a salt water boat. Big heat on transom shield around the pin to break the corrosion free, along with driving the pin with a brass punch towards the bellows. Turn the drive so the pin will clear the steering fork. Don't even think about touching that pin with a steel punch. If you flare the end at all, you will never get it out.

Note, when I say big heat, I mean with an Oxy/Act torch so you heat it up quick and hot before the pin gets hot too. Propane torch is useless.

Re: DP-C: can't get pivot pins out.

hello Don:
Thanks for the reply. Actually the boat spent most of it's life in fresh water, brought to fl. in 2009, supposedly only in salt "3 times" before being stored. One dunking in salt is sufficient to start corrosion if not cleaned properly and left to sit, which I suspect was the case.
Any way I got them out with brute force and some heat. The thing I was wondering about was the threads inside the pin (metric) I suspect with the proper bolt and piece of tubing you could pull them out.
Thanks for the reply.

Ted . Don is right on using heat and how soft these pins are.. be careful to not overheat.

cut and paste from another source
Be very careful with Oxy-Acetylene heat on your Volvo Penta transom shield. In the wrong hands it can be damaging..... especially with an oxygen rich flame.
I would suggest using a Mapp Gas torch instead. It does not require much heat to slightly expand the aluminum enough to free up the hinge pins.
Use an aluminum or brass punch only. Work them in one direction and then the other. They will come loose.
