I have a bad feeling I can answer my own question, but I'm going to ask it anyway...

Went down to work on the boat last night and noticed that the stbd engine trim cylinders appear to be leaking. I don't remember them leaking last fall when we pulled and blocked the boat, so I'm not sure how it is possible that they are now since they haven't moved. Also, they have been hanging down since I pulled the drives, but the oil appears to have moved about 3/4 of the way up the cylinder. Bizarre, huh? Anyway, I've searched this site as well as the internet and it appears that volvo trim cylinders are NOT rebuildable. This is odd considering the manual for the SX and DP-S drive shows how to disassemble and replace seals and o-rings. I would much rather spend $40-50 on a reseal than $900 on a new pair of trim cylinders.

I was having some handling issues at the end of last season which was do in part to some tab issues I was having. I'm starting to think this wasn't helping anything either...

So, the big question here is: Can they be rebuilt or am I screwed???

Yes, these can be rebuilt. There is a kit by Johnson/OMC that has all the seals in them. Do a search for my posts and it has the number. If that doesn't work I may still have the kit. It's 27.00 bucks or so for each side. you need a 1.5 inch open face spanner wrench to get the end caps off. Mine came off easily. The Bolt at the end of the impact valve was pretty tight but it only takes abot 30 min a side to do them. Lot better than $900.00 for new ones..

Thanks, Senior B! That's the best news I've had all week! I went back and searched your posts but did not find the number. Actually, I also tried searching anything you had posted with the keyword "johnson". No luck. Not even today's post came up. I'm not sure what that is about. If you can find the number I would really appreciate it!

The kit's part number is 985060. It's made by OMC. It says for all Cobra drives and works just fine on the SX. Just google the part number and it will come up. Kit price is now @ $30.00. It has several seals for various models of trim cyl but the instuctions that come with it tell which seals to use. It really isn't all that difficult to do.

Google "BRP 985060" and pick the link for "boats.net". This is where I got mine from and it's $25.62. Good luck

An alternative is to take it apart and take the seals to a hydraulic shop and get them matched up. If the rams are badly pitted you can have them replated.

It's a shame that VP doesn't give the directions because there is no need to buy new rams.

Thanks, guys. I found the BRP kit at a local shop and plan to install it tomorrow. It seems really odd that VP would make a serviceable item, show how to service it in the manual, but then NOT sell the kit. That seems like a pretty good customer relations screw up to me.
