drain engine oil completly or just pump out on I/O

Do you people pump/suck out the engine oil without taking off the drain plug, or do you take off the plug and let the oil drain completly? I'm talking about I/O's like my 4.3L mercruiser.

was just talking about this on another thread. think the consenses is that siphoneing it don't get all the sludge out, useing the drain plug does better. the other thread was about useng the hose on the oil drain plug to drain it out the main drain plug for your boat i think. <br />personaly, i siphoned mine out, and have the option of the hose. siphoneing is such a clean way to do a messy job i think. jim

hello<br /> if its a marine dipstick tube it will pull it all out ok. if the engine has that much "sludge" you need to pull it apart anyway. there are several nice extractors on the market. I use either a shur-flow or a slurper. both work well.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt is correct. With today's oils and with frequent oil changes, there should never be any sludge in the motor.

Sludge isn't sludge until you let it sit. Run the motor until it's good and warm and the sludge will mix in and suck out. Or at least the vast majority of it. If you were to let the motor sit over winter with dirty oil, then you'd have a sludge problem. A lot of dealers competing for winterizing dollars will not include oil changes with their winterizing. The sludge settles out over the winter months. Then next spring when the oil gets changed, the clean oil is poured over the sludge and the first time it's used, the oil is instantly dirty.

I use a "topsider" changer.Just as the oil sucking is complete,I add a 1/2 quart of oil to each valve cover to get all the old down in the pan and continue to extract the quart.Charlie
