Drain hole in transom well

I have a new to me 1998 Crestliner 24 foot pontooon boat with a 115 Yamaha on it. I have been slowly fixing and up grading things on it and I noticed that the transom well always has water in it. I reached under the motor and felt about a 1 1/2 to 2 inche hole at the bottom of the transom that lets water in. Is there any reason this should not have some kind of scupper on it so water could drain, but not flow back in? I haven't verified it, but I suspect that when the boat is moving forward the water is draining out anyway. Is there any reason that the boat should sit in the water lower to start out and that is why the hole is there? Thanks

Re: Drain hole in transom well

Very turbulent water passes between the tubes on a pontoon and it is very normal for the motor pod to have water in it whether running or at the dock. It is simply not a problem. Like mosts boats, at rest the stern will sit lower because the CG of the boat is aft of the centerline. At speed it tends to flatten out.

Re: Drain hole in transom well

I agree with the turbulent water part, but I was really trying to figure out if I should leave the hole that is under the motor at the back bottom of the transom well open the way it is now or if I should try to put a scupper or plate on it to keep some of the water from flowing back in to the water level every time the boat stops. This boat stays in the water and the transom has what feels like a wooden center that is sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum. The bottom of the wood stays wet unless the boat is moving. Letting the wood stay wet just somehow seems wrong to me since it will want to wick upwards. I do know that it as been in the water at least for the last three years and the wood is still solid though.

Leave it as it is... That wood will last a long long time and is relatively easy to change when and if needed.

That is for trailering so the water drains when you load the boat and as stated as you get underway the water is sucked out.

We just changed our center backboards at Bennington and put 2 3''x5'' holes in to drain the waterfast once you get underway so it is suppose to be there and shoudl stay
