Got a question. I installed a new water pump impeller on my engine and cleaned up the cavity where the shift rod goes down to the lower unit. This cavity has a drain hole coming out just above & on the left hand side of the rounded gearcase boss (think thats what its called--im new to boat motors):) My question is while I had the muffs on the engine to test my water pump I noticed a stream of water coming out this hole. Is it supposed to do that? By the way it a 1988 15hp johnson

Everybody gets anxious and upset over drain holes. Don't. Of course water comes out them. That's why they are there.

The holes allow water to drain when the motor is not in use so the castings do not crack due to ice expansion.
