My drain plug hole on my exaughst elbow is corroded/rusted and I was hoping someone could tell me what size tap to buy to clean it out. Thanks

Re: Drain plugs

Just curious. Why are the threads rusted/corroded ? Was the plug loose and leaking,or just left out over several winters?

It is an 85 model. I have only owned the boat for a couple of years but I take the plugs out in the winter. ( probably should shoot a little WD in there ) I think the problem is more due to wearing than the rust that I see in the threads. Last time I took the boat out the brass plug stripped out so I went to NAPA and purchased another plug which seemed like the correct size. I attempted to install the new plug by tightening and loosing a bit at a time ( which I have done with other applications ), however the brass plug is to soft to clean up the threads in the elbow. I am not that familiar with tapping but it seems to me that I should run a tap through the elbow to clean and straighten the threads before installing the new plug. That being said I would very much appreciate any advice.

When you remove a plug to drain the system, put the plug back in when done. That keeps the threads from rusting up.
