I am just about complete rebuilding my Mercruiser 165HP IL6. Before I put it back into the boat I want to install petcocks (spelling) in the spots to drain the blcok and manifold. I believe there is a spot on the starborb side of the block towards the rear and one underneath the manifold.
Are these the only two spots and where can I find brass petcocks for this?

Re: Drain Plugs

FreeBeTony:

Here is an idea for you before you reinstal the engine. I have a 24ft Bayliner with a 302 Ford. I once had the engine out to repair the stringers and before I put it back in the boat I installed a T connection at the oil pan ( right at the bottom of the pan) where the dip stick goes in. I attached a clear plastic hose to that connection. The hose is plenty long enough to go through the drain plug hole at the bottom of the V (stern)of the boat. When I want to change oil I put the hose through the hole at the back of the boat and place a container under the hose so that the oil drains out. It might take a while but it saves me the hassle of trying to pump out the oil. Or paying the local marine shop in excess of $75.00 to change oil. All of this is of course is assuming you take your boat in and out.

Hope this is of some help.

Email me if you wish for a more detailed explanation. osark@shaw.ca

Harry

Tony,

Weren't there pepcocks (I don't know if that's the right spelling either) in the engine when you took it out of the boat. You're talking about making it easy to winterize right? I'll look at my boat this wkend and post back. It'll be here if you haven't finished yet. Those are the only two spots where I drain the water out of my block. You should be able to get them from a marine store, maybe where you bought your boat.
