Re: drain plugs

It has a garden hose connection and it is used to flush the engine. Required after every salt water use. No so important if all the engine sees is fresh water. You don't need to run the engine to use the feature.

It is to flush water through the cooling system- generally after use in salt water. But also probably a good idea after use in muddy or silty water to clear any build up.

With these Merc 9.8's, you should not use that flush fitting to run the engine on the hose, unfortunately. The way the plumbing is set up, water running into that hole does not adequately flood the water pump, therefore if you try to run the engine with only that as a source of water, it might damage the rubber water pump impeller.

The fitting is pretty common. I don't know what it's called, but you can get water hose adapters for that thread. If nothing else, ask in a boat shop, but you can get the proper fitting at most hardware or home stores.
