This one has to be easy , I read about it somewhere before:
I got a 69' Johnson 33HP electric
I was checking the lower unit and removed the drain screw. Now the screw will not line back up to go in. Something got moved somehow . How do I correct this ? Do I have to remove the bottom gear casing ?

Also anyone know where to get a seal kit for this outboard?

Are you sure it is the drain screw we are talking about ??
What kind of head does the screw have ??

Re: Drain screwed will not line up

I don't know about your motor in particular but the Evinrude's and Johnson's I have had in the past have a screw close to the drain screw that if I remember correctly lets some of the linkage inside the LU pivot on. I had a mid sixties 20 hp Johnson that was like this. You should probably get a manual but I am thinking you took out the wrong screw to drain it. Perhaps you can have someone slowly shift the motor while you look in the hole with a flashlight to see if there are some linkage pieces moving around with small holes in them. Better check with the manual or an expert first though. Is there another screw close buy that might be the drain screw? On mine I believe the two drain screws (upper and lower) were slotted and the other one for the internal linkage was a phillips. Good Luck.

That's exactly where i was heading without being so direct.

I'll bet it's 33 electric start but not electric shift and the screw removed has a phillips head.......

We should put a sticky on to of the forum that says "DON"T TAKE OUT THE PHILLIPS HEAD SCREW WHEN CHANGING THE OIL !!"

If any of the threaded part is showing try using a small Phillips screwdriver or a pick to line it back up.You might lucky.

It's right in the "Top Secret Files"
They don't go in there until somebody sends them there. If it was titled like the other forum "ADULTS ONLY---KEEP OUT---XXX" then it might work better.:redface:

If we did that then we would have to have a few hundred stickies for the possibilities that are there to make a boo boo

I got lucky! In regards to the not reading the stickies , I did read all those :
in my first post I wrote:

Just couldn't recall where I read this . i read alot and misplace things alot ,it's a bad combination on message boards I suppose .

Now riddle me this batman ?

I can only find one "oil level" hole . Only one sloted screw to be found minus the ones for the intake and shift rod in the upper leg. Have a look and see...
