I have a 1992 Sumbird 185 (I know somebody will give me **** for having a Sunbird) with a 4.3L OMC I/O in really great shape that I got for next to nothing. It hasn't been run in quite a few years (which is why I got it cheap). I need to get the fuel out of the tank as I am sure that it has gone bad by now. What would be the best way to drain it as the tank is built into the floor? I was thinking of buying a cheap electric fule pump and using that but I am open to suggestions. Anything else I should do other than an oil change before I fire this up? Thanks in advance. swsidlo@msn.com

What are you going to do with the fuel after removing it? I'd suggest just taking the boat to a hazardous waste removal company and let them suck it out, or call a mobile one.

Your carbs will need to be rebuilt.

drill a hole through the bottom of the boat up into the tank and let gravity do the work...it's only a Sunbird :D :D

just kidding - is there any reason why you couldn't use an oil suction pump? Like Haut Medoc said, just do a search. Should be all set.

I just drained about 25 gallons of old reformulated California gas from my 87 FourWinns. It has sat for about 2 years or so and I wanted to remove all the old gas so I could replace the filter and the cracked fuel line from the tank.

I thought I could just use a long hose connected to the fuel line after I disconnected it from the filter and siphon it but it just wouldn't work. (must be an anti siphon or check valve in the fuel tank or something?)

I have a small 12v operated Bendix fuel pump that worked just fine. It took a long time but completely drained the tank.

I'm going to find out just how old that fuel is. I'm going to put it in my 55 Ford truck and see what happens. It ran fine in my 11hp BS (That's Briggs & Stratton for you people in Rio Linda!) powered generator today.

Regards,

Rick

i removed the fuel gauge sending unit. ran a hose out the bilge drain, tilted the bow up and siphoned into fuel cans.

That's a great idea if you're going to remove the fuel sender for some reason.

I'm actually thinking about doing just that. It's a good way to "vacuum" out the tank while siphoning fuel...you can move the hose around and suck out all the debris in the tank while there's still fuel to siphon. Just be sure your container is big enough to handle all the fuel you're siphoning!
