Dream start

I have a dream of starting my 1974 15hp Evinrude from cold in 2 pulls of the starter rope. I did a major rebuild over the winter which has improved things considerably but a 2 pull start is still rare.
A start usually goes like this: Open tank breather, set throttle to start position, squeeze primer bulb until firm, pull choke right out, pull starter. On the first pull the motor fires a little but doesn't quite start. I then pull again and it doen't fire at all. It usually starts after 2 or 3 more pulls with the choke right in or half in (seems to be little difference between these 2 choke positions, but right out is definitely no go).
How can I achieve my dream?

Re: Dream start

Check your float level again. This is a common symptom for an engine with the float level set too high, allowing a little too much fuel into the idle circuit. It doesn't actually flood itself out, really, but there's too much fuel.

That's why you have to push the choke back in, partially or fully, to get it started after that first pull.

Once the float is set properly, you'll probably get a one-pull or two-pull start from cold every time.

In the meantime, try setting the throttle a little above the Start position. That might just lean the mixture down enough to compensate.

Re: Dream start

My dad told me a long time ago, when cranking a 2-stroke and it fires, if the choke is on, turn it off. If it's off, turn it on. Keep on with this routine for best success. Works for me.
