Re: Drilling out a stock prop.

Gregg, looks like the holes in your prop are on the wrong side for helping holeshot. It'll be interesting to see how that works.

We have drilled holes on the pressure side but not there and not to help holeshot.

Behind the blade is where the exhaust will be sucked out for the next blade and allow the revs to build. I don't recall seeing a prop ventilated in front of the blades.

Are you talking about cutting the blades off and increasing the rake angle?

I'd try it to see what it changed, if anything. They can be plugged easy enough. It'll be interesting to see.

If you have the time to play, you could try building up the trailing edge of the blades with epoxy and sand smooth to form a cup. I used epoxy to fill in missing chunks the size of a half dollar from an old/abused OMC prop, and also built up one blade leading edge about 1/4" to bring it back to original shape/size just for the heck of it and it has held up just fine on my 40hp.

I use the Hustler aluminum props with a cup, and the cup is not very large at all, but the RPM change by switching from an uncupped to cupped prop is like going up/down 2 degrees in pitch.

Bigger hp might cause epoxy to fail, but kind of fun to experiment.

Re: Drilling out a stock prop.

Gatorred,

Just fill the holes with epoxy. I'm sure it will hold solid. That old OMC prop I mess around with had holes drilled and somebody filled them with plain old blue silicone and it hasn't blown out yet!

Put a piece of tape over the hole from the inside and fill with epoxy from the outside.

If you want to make it really pretty, cut a small section from a stainless bolt and epoxy that in the hole, then grind and polish. Probably won't envn notice.

Re: Drilling out a stock prop.

i try running it first the balance fact is what the prop guy said would make it spin the center again,it did better then the 21 i have with no holes before the cup was added the slipping was the problem i had to start with after i sucked up a rope it may have bent the blade's a little I just couldn't tell by eye. but if I have to i will use epoxy if i have to.

Re: Drilling out a stock prop.

I am interested in doing this to my outboard, is there any downsides? Will it cause quicker wearing of the propeller? Will it make my engine alwasys rev considerably higher? What are the pros and cons?

Re: Drilling out a stock prop.

I tried the OMC hole thing on a 3 blade 17" pitch prop. It didn't do anything useful for me at all on my 16 ft bowrider and 3.0 Cobra. The only thing I noticed is that it ventilated more in tight turns.

Re: Drilling out a stock prop.

Well, i tryed my prop out yesterday.. I am very surprised that 3 little holes can make such a big difference...

As stated previously i had extreme problems with 1. getting out of the hole quicker. 2. Not enough power to even drive my boat on the trailer.

These 3 magical holes seem to boost my rpms up to a range that has more power. Trailering is 10x better. and hole shot has improved greatly.

The fox river in green bay was to packed to try top speed. I will give you guys up to date..

thanks for the tidbit of help!
