Hey Tin boat folks, I need to ask you a quick question.

When replacing the transom wood how do you get the angle right for drilling the mounting holes so as to match the factory aluminum bracket holes?

Re: Drilling transom holes??

I went through the extra step of inserting my cut transom and marking the holes then removing it and drilled the holes ovesized so I could coat the holes with epoxy to waterproof them. This process makes it hard to line up all the holes when reinserting the transom wood but the wood wont rot if the silicone
sealant fails.

Yes, but how did you get the angle correct? Use the "Best guess" method?

Re: Drilling transom holes??

So I was thinking of this today and had a "duh" moment.

Now that I have my holes, I am thinking of a block(s) of 2x4, running the drill bit though the holes and into the block transferring the angle(s) and using that to get the correct angle for the redrill after the epoxy fill.

Wish I had thought of that BEFORE trashing what passed for the old transom board.

Seems simple enough, anyone see any problem with it?

I'm a day late and dollar short...

That's how I drilled holes for an I/O transom assembly that had to be perfectly straight. I took 2 pieces of 3/4 MDF and glued them together, then drilled a series of holes (1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8, etc) through the block on my drill press so they were perfectly at 90*. Clamped the block onto the transom and started working up in drill size, the holes turned out perfectly straight and dead center to where they should be.
