Drills and Tape Measures don't float either

Was working on the new floater at my dad's house. As he was drilling earlier in the day with my craftsman 18v cordless I made a joking comment to make sure he didn't drop it in the water. (foreshadowing)

A little bit later as he was reaching for the level on the overhanging dock he knocked his 25 foot tape measure in the drink. It bubbled for a while but we couldn't snag it with the net.

So as the day is winding down I'm getting ready to leave, and I grabbed a piece of wood off the overhanging dock. Wood hits drill. Drill falls from overhanging dock on to floater and teeters over the edge into the water. Plunk. This also bubbles. I yell to my dad who's up in the yard to get the net. He says don't worry about the tape measure it's probably ruined. I said It's not for the tape measure, it's for my drill. After he got done laughing at me he handed me the net and I was able to snag the drill. Removed battery and doused it with the garden hose for a few minutes. Dried out and all is well. Still working so far.

Tape measure is still sleeping with the fishes.

Wonder if the fish are using it to find out who is 'legal'. :)

Im glad the drill still works. That is very fortunate.

Cool if it is a Sears brand drill and it had not worked I would have taken it back and gotten a new 1. :)

With Craftsman, the hand tools are warrantied for life. Power tools are not, they're 1 year or 3 year or whatever.

I got it out of the salt in like 90 seconds, then with the battery out of it I doused it with the full flow of a garden hose to get all of the saltwater out of it. Then let it dry. All the drill is, is a battery, a motor and a rheostat for the trigger, so there's not much that could get damaged, especially if it was never operated wet.

Glad some other folks other than my dad also got a quick giggle out of my day. :)

Later,

The only good reason for using mains power tools. If you do drop them in the drink you can pull them out buy the cord :D :D

My eye glasses don't float either. My wife didn't laugh at the $300 loss.

It's funny how you sometimes get a feeling about something ahead of time. I was installing a sink and rebuilding a fish cleaning table for LF one time. My cordless was sitting about a foot from the edge of the table. I noticed that as I was hammering it jumped and moved a little. I thought about settin it on the ground but figured "nah, it'll never vibrate all the way off the edge". Sure enough, a few minutes later I heard a splash as the cordless went over the edge into the canal. Never worked again.

Death never sounds like a good idea to me....even if you can pull out the tool by the cord!

The trick is to UNPLUG the tool from the wall, THEN fish it out by the cord. :D

Just happened to my pop last saturday. Asked him to untie the boat. He bent down and without even looking up I hear PLOP............phone is gone in 8ft of murky water. :(

Gave him an old one I had until he is ready to buy a new one with a contract renewal in Sept. :)

Needless to say I took my phone off after that an put it in my cargo shorts zipper pocket. ;)

Last summer I jumped of the boat tocool off and to my suprise I had left my cell phone in my pocket. A week later after it sat on my fire place mantel It started working again. Sorry to say 3months later I left it on top of the car and has never been seen again :(

I always put my wallet and my cell phone in ziplock-style sandwich bags before heading out on the water. Then I zip them in a pocket.

I'm sure that the first time I forget to do that, I'm going to soak them, though.

Speaking of cellphones, hauling out my boat 2 weeks ago, I went down hard at the ramp wading in to hook the bow. Splash. Noticed when I got home and changed clothes that the cell was in my pocket. Never stopped working. SamSung SCH-A670.

My wife dropped her cell in the central console of her car like she always does but there was a cup of sweet tea lol and the phone sat it in for 1 hour till she got home.

She came in carring a dripping stick i 530 and almost crying, i took the battery off rinced it off in the sink and let it set in my car for 3 days till it was dryed completely.

Installed battery and it has worked fine and that was a year ago
