I have a spare driveshaft. If I replace my gimble bearing, can I use the driveshaft to check my engine alignment or do I NEED an alignment tool.

The boat has a 165 Mercruiser with a pre-Alpha outdrive.

Yes, that will work. Weld a steel pipe on the yoke end to make it a little easier to handle. You then have to make sure the shaft goes all the way in so the O-ring grooves are inside the gimbal bearing.

Thanks for the info. We seem to be experiencing a pre-spring here (temps in the high 50's) and I may do some pre-season work this weekend: new bellows and gimbal bearing.
