Drive cable/shaft question

This is pretty noob question I think.

I bought a boat that I wanted to upgrade the motor on. I recently sold the motor and am in the process of removing the motor from the boat for the guy that bought it. Now I'm stuck. The steering shaft, that runs from the steering wheel to the outboard is obviously very stiff. As the part of a motor sale, would you remove this and sell it with the motor? Basically what I am asking is are these specific to motor type? or is it pretty much something that sticks with the boat? It seems like it will be a complete pain in the butt to remove this thing from the boat, but if they are specific to motor type then I guess you would?

One last question, removing the shaft part that goes through the mounting bracket on the outboard seems like it will be rough. Do you just slip it out as you remove the motor from the transom?

Again, these are completely noob questions but I'll admit I'm a noob. Atleast when it comes to outboard motor swaps and installs.

its all according to what kind of attachment you have on your upgrade ,it would be a good move to go ahead an change cables since you are going to have motor out of the way which it may not matter on your boat, but on mine you cant remove cable without pulling the motor.i thought most of the cables are interchangable with different engines i may be wrong tho, yea the cables are pretty stiff. good luck on your install

Posting what engine and drive you are working on will help get correct answers.

I take it this is an I/O boat.The drive must be pulled before the engine is removed.

Sorry, it is a 2000 4 stroke 25HP Suzuki outboard I am removing. As for the replacement I don't know yet because I am looking for one still. 70-90 4-stroke outboards are like needles in a haystack.

I am thinking I may just leave it in, and hope it works with the next motor? What are your thoughts? Or is it assumed when I sell a outboard with controls that is part of it?

Most of the time the steering stays with the boat. The control box and cables are specific to the engine.

Undo the nut on the other end and when you remove the motor you will have to move it sideways to port to pull the cable out.

Thanks CR, that is pretty much what I suspected...I think keeping the drive shaft is the best idea, any other opinions?
