Re: Drive dog

Heres the scenario.. I was on the water a few days ago and the boat was running fine but when I was coming back in I was doing @30mph when and it sounded like the engine just wound out and stopped. The engine didnt shut down so I shut it down and opened the hood to take a look and everything looked fine so I turned it over again and it sounded like crackling/grinding coming from the mid unit and when I went to put it into drive it wouldnt go and the grinding just got louder. Somebody had suggested to me it could be the drive dog or a spun hub so how can I check for these things once I get the boat out of the water or would it be easier just to but a second hand lower unit and throw it on and be done? Thanks for the reply...

A spun hub will not give you a grinding noise. Your options will either be as you say get a second lower unit or take the one you have apart and see what kind of damage is done. Before taking it apart remove the lower drain plug. Usually these are magnetic and metal parts that ground off will end up there. If not drain a couple of drops of fluid and run them through your fingers and see if you can find metal particles in it. Gears for these motors are hard to come by. If the edges are rounded they can be refaced for about 50 bucks. If they are broken finding a new one will be a challenge. To have a pro take it apart and look will be at least $200 and that does not include repair. Good Luck.
