Can anyone tell me what the gear oil capacity is for the stern drive MCM-470? Also, can I purchase new gear oil from a auto parts store or does it have to be "Quicksilver Super-Duty Gear Lubricant"?

I've gone through the manual and cannot seem to find a capacity for the drive. I was running on muffs today and the impeller is inop so I need to change it - requiring me to drain the oil. Thanks in advance!

Re: drive gear oil?

All that matters is that you fill it from the bottom untill it comes out the top.
Most are around 1 1/2 qts. Capacity also depends on whether the unit is dry from a build or wet from a oil change.

I already have a pump to install the oil through the drain plug so this is not a problem. Just curious if there is a specific weight I should use over another. Thanks!

I see you are in Florida. Are you on a remote island in the 10,000 islands area or something? Wal Mart ... West Marine... local marina... any place will sell basic outdrive gear oil. Even the Mercruiser High Performance lube that I like.

Re: drive gear oil?

My question was if I could use auto gear oil or not....not where to get gear oil. For me a marine parts store is much farther than a auto parts place, and my local walmart doesn't carry any. Although, I wish I did reside on a remote island...

I was commenting on your need to get it soon... so you don't have to waste another weekend.

I don't want to argue - but ANY Wal Mart that I have been to in Florida carries marine supplies - including gear oil. Are you looking in the sporting goods section? If you are close enough to the Ocean to go boating, then your Wal Mart will carry what you need.

Heh, I didn't write that to "attack" what you said or argue; I apologize if I came off that way.

I know what stores carry the oil and all that but for work, location, etc. reasons, I was just curious if it was something I could get at an auto parts place since it is literally right down the road from me. My Walmart is one of those tiny ones that doesn't have much of anything I ever need; and the super walmart which probably has it is a bit of a ways away...

Re: drive gear oil?

Some Walmart stores do not carry Marine supplies. As part of the big box status of the new walmarts, stores are only allowed to carry x number of products. Our walmart can only carry 10000 items, and Marine supplies are very limited if at all availible. Besides, try to support your local dealers and stores instead of the money grubbing big box stores.....My local Napa, which is locally owned may not carry what I need , but if I ask they can get it in a day or so.....

Just get a 75W90 grade Gl-5 gear lube.

No offense taken. ;)

I'm sure that's true... but any I've seen in Florida do.

I like NAPA as well... but confess to shopping at the money grubbing box stores as well on occassion. :D
