I have an 89 aq231a. It has this style lower unit:

I'm wondering if I can bolt on this style:

Its missing the data plate I kinda figure its a 270 but wondering if any 270/280/290 will go on. Reason is its cracked

Found the serial number by the helmet: 27122279 if that helps...

Yes, they are interchangeable.

Thanks, I have a V8 so I'm assuming its 1.61:1. So as long as the 280 is the same ratio its just bolt on right?

You will need to use the bearing race for the 280 lower, and it will have to be reshimmed in the intermediate housing.

Whats the bearing race? and could you explain the shimming process? I found a used complete 280 lower was hoping I could just bolt it on.

The bearing on the vertical shaft probably has a different bearing than the newer 280 drive. The OD of the race is the same but the inside bearing was different due to different shafts.
Here is a link to the OEM service manual for your 270. Page 25 of the manual covers reshimming the race in the upper.
