Just bought this boat and took it out today. 98 ebbtide. Works good but has a growling like a searing noise coming from the drive. It does it in gear or in neutral. I have never been in o w of these and only done a couple water pumps on outboards.
question is what bearing are prone to failure? Start at the input shaft ( horizontal) or drop the lower unit and work up? Thanks for any help and suggestions

What Hondo said. If you can post a pic of the drained oil would be good also.

While you are at it pull the the top cap on the outdrive and take a pic of the innards after you drain the oil and share the pic.

3/8" 12 point socket.

Couldn’t sleep. Found the culprit. Gimbal bearing( I think that’s what it’s called) nasty and rough. Oil looked ok. Had some derbisnon the magnet that doesn’t look pleasant but nothing I’d think is excessive. Turning the shaft on the outdrive it is nice and smooth.
I understand these bearings can come out with a slide hammer. I think I have an axle pulled attachment that will work. However the water in the bottom of the bellows bothers me. The universals didn’t look as if they have been wet
so what to do? Obviously replace the bearing but is a little water normal or should it be completely dry? Also is the o rings on the shaft to seal the bellows from the engine side? Or to alight the shaft with the bearing?

Sounds like a winner. Any links or pics of the special tools? I have seen the tool to take the horlizinal pins out. What needs to be aligned?

An alignment bar us needed to check it every time you remove the drive for service. You put it through the gimble into the coupler to see if everything it true. Read the stickys at the top of this forum and you will find lots of good info.

If ya replace gimbal, examine billows. If older than 5 years, I'd replace it too. Also replace inner transom seal (behind gimbal bearing before shaft goes into coupler. Water got into it from somewhere?

I’d say it has sone age on it. It is pretty stiff. I’ve watched some videos on how to remove the bell housing. Any tips? Also is the adhesive necessary?

If you can tell us exactly what you have, what motor and what drive I`m sure we can find you a manual

So I have made an alignment shaft. Does anyone have dimensions for The bearing instal tool to use with it? Of some dimensions of the bearing? Mainly the old and how much the inner race sticks out past the outter race?
