Well i'm putting the outdrive back on and i went to spin the drive shaft alittle to line back up the splines and i could spin it all the way around. Last time i had it off i know it didn't do this. It would stop at some point.

When i was taking the outdrive off this last time i notice i couldn't pull it out because i didn't put it in gear. so i went up and put it it gear and slid it out.
What i need to know is if i screwed some thing up and if i need to fix it before i can put the out drive back on thx.

There's no problem with what you're doing. Just ensure that you have the drive shifted to FWD, put a rubber bungee on the prop (in the reverse direction) to hold a little pressure on the "dogs" so it stays in FWD.

After you have checked your alignment with an alignment tool, Lube the splines with Mercury Engine Coupler Grease

and re-install the drive.

If the splines do not "mesh" turn the prop a little in the wrong direction (reverse) to turn the shaft to get the splines aligned with the coupler.

Cheers,

edit- what he said^^^^^^^^^^

Did you make sure the drive was in fwd when installing? If you bump the prop fwd while sliding the drive on it will pop out of gear. The shift lever should be pointing straight fwd on the drive. If you keep a little pressure on the prop twds rev it will stay in gear. The shift lever must engage the slot in the shift shaft on the transom assy when you slide it on.

Was the drive in fwd when installed?

Did you replace shift cable? If so it should not be hooked up to the shift plate yet because you have to set the 6in measurement. If cable is not hooked up yet shift handle position will not matter. If you didn't set the 6in measurement your cable adjust might be off causing no fwd even if drive installed correctly.
