Pulled the lower off ('98 yammy 115 hp) to replace the water pump and when I did there was a small amount of oil that came out from above- dripped down drive shaft. Just wondering if this is normal or a sign of a bad seal that needs to be replaced?

Thx - spete

hello
its not uncommon to have a small amount of fuel/oil mix nasties on the top area of the driveshaft. if it continues after you replace the pump its time to worry. otherwise no worries :)

Re: drive shaft & oil?

Thanks Rblt. - was hoping that it was normal to have a bit of oil but wasn't sure. Probably only amounted to about 1 cc or so.

I got the water pump repair kit today from theYamaha dealer and was a bit surprised that for $75 it wouldn't include the plastic pump housing. Oh well, I'll just replace the parts that came with it. The old impeller had lost much of its memory and i think it was slowly starting to not displace well at low RPM's even though the rubber was in pretty good shape.

Wondering if I could use a plumbers pipe thread stick/pipe dope on the bolts to keep them from getting seized/corroded through the next w.p. change?

Thanks again!

Re: drive shaft & oil?

I used your recommendation on the two large screwdriver pry technique to remove the metal/nylon drive shaft retainer cup/washer. Had a bit of trouble getting it to twist up - did have good luck with a modified approach i thought i might share with you.

Place one large screwdriver (broom handle, etc.) across gear case mating surface in front of the driveshaft as a fulcrum. Pry up with other screwdriver in lever fashion while turning the driveshaft. Metal ring will slowly pry up as it rotates.

For what its worth - spete

Re: drive shaft & oil?

hello
just use a good water proof marine grease on all the bolts. I usually leave the impeller cup in place and use it as a fulcrum. less work for me:) :)
I do 10 or so a week so its no worries. although I did have to cut another off a few days ago.
its not often they wont come off but it happens
good luck and post back if ya have any questions
