Re: Drive shaft stuck to drive coupler

Another possibility is to lower (or raise) the front engine mount a little, and then run the engine for a couple of minutes..... That may put enough sideways force on the coupler/shaft to break it free. What's the worst that could happen? You break something. Well, something is going to get broken anyway....

Chris.......

Makes sense to me.

When you say "burn the center out of the coupler" with a torch, I assume you mean melt the rubber around the splines in the coupler? Forgive me for asking, but have you done this before? Sounds pretty dangerous to me.

I have burnt out rear engine mounts before as the bolts were so corroded that it was the only way... As for the coupler, no I haven't had to it, but I have come close a few times. As long as you use a short, hot flame it shouldn't be too bad... Simple rule when doing things like this...

Get in quick, hit it hard, get out fast.... and if you're not confident, don't do it.

Works every time...

When you get done trying to soak the corrosion out of 3" deep of splines, and running with it out of alignment, and doing all sorts of crazy things and then finally cut the shaft.

PS: Even if you were lucky enough to get it apart, the shaft will be so pitted with rust, that it would probably destroy your new coupling very quickly anyway.
Just doesn't seem worth spending all summer trying to get apart.

If you need to cut....If you can get to the shaft in front of the yoke you will just need to replace the yoke and not the input shaft to the drive. But you might want to price both items so you can cut the cheaper piece if needed.

So did you manage to somehow get it apart, or did you end up cutting it?
