Drive shaft ?

How do I know if I have a preload pin -I droped the lower unit and Im having some problems with the drive shaft.I do see a hole in the top but I did not see a pin.I did have a hard time getting the lower unit down.Also she has not been ran in 8 10 years That I know of.It runs very well for an older engine but I wanted to replace the water pump and now I have problems getting thing to work and if someone can tell me how it is that I can put the unit back up and have no gears. (handel forward) lower unit is in drive turn flywheel try to find the splines But its like there are no splines in the engine.
I did run this engine in gear before the new water pump so I know it work.

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME IDEAS AS TO WHAT MAY BE WRONG

That unit does not have a preload pin, put the unit and the gear housing in rev gear before installing (remember when the unit is in rev the prop won't turn in fwd rotation- CW)
