I think that's what it's called on a boat motor. Anyway I have a 1988 125 force and the shaft broke about half way down. Is this a 1 or 2 pc. shaft and is it a pain to replace it if it's a 1pc.and if it's a 2pc is the coupling in the gear box. Thanks for your time.

Re: drive shaft

You have a 1 piece shaft. It will need special tools to replace correctly.
It will be easier to measure the old and buy something off e-bay.J

Re: drive shaft

custom car drive shafts are butt welded together and they are hollow and hold up to clutch dumps and high HP... If you know a professional who can Tig weld then I would say try it. It should hold. I wouldn't arc or mig it though.

No it won't hold. It's been tried time and again. Some times it lasts for 2 seconds then it might last for an hour but it's gonna go.
If you have a machine shop you might get a coupler made up.It depends on where it's snapped.Post a pic.Fill out the profile. You might be near someone who can help.J

Re: drive shaft

Ok it's broke were they drilled out the center of the shaft and inserted a rod. Why did they do this? It came from the factory like this I understand but no one know why it's like that. What kind of sleeve are you thinking about?A welded or threaded or weld the shaft and the sleeve?

Re: drive shaft

Like the splines on the prop shaft.A good machine shop can make one.
But that depends on where it's broken.Post a pic.
If it in the thin section. Then a splined and welded would probably last longer.J
