1981 Mercruiser Type I drive - I pulled the drive yesterday and found that the big rubber gasket between the stern drive unit and the bell housing must have fallen out of place the last time it was put together, most of the gasket was laying in the bellows and only about 1/4 of it was in place. Is this how the water got in that I found in the bellows? The bellows itself looks good with no signs of tears. Needless to say I'll be replacing the gimbal bearing.

Yes, that's why I always glue that ring in place with bellows adhesive, when installing.
