Drivers license rant...

Ok, so my birthday was this month and I had to renew my license after 8 years. That's the longest stretch they would issue one for last time I renewed it. So I went in yesterday and I can't say I cared for the process. I am now in the "over 55 group" so I had to take a vision test, prove I could read road signs, and a short driving test. (passed with no problems)

Got it all done and then was told the longest license I could have was 4 years because of my age!!! Come on people, I do NOT have one foot in the grave and I?ll wager I can drive the wheels off of 95% of the drivers half my age. Yes I fully understand that there are some older folks that should not be driving but if a person takes their test and shows they are a good driver then I see no reason to just lump everyone together by age and put a bunch of restrictions on them. Sure felt like discriminaton to me!

Oh, the funny part? The trooper that gave me the driving test asked if I was going to be an instructor at the emergency vehicle driving school again this fall. I replied, ?Only if someone can push me and my wheel chair to it? and he cracked up laughing. :D

Rant mode off...

Round these parts, licenses expire every 5 years. The first time it expires, you can renew on-line. The second time (10 years), you need to go to an RMV branch for a new photo and eye exam.

People over 75 must go to the RMV every 5 years for an eye exam, and to fill out a questioner. Despite what seems like a monthly occurrence of an 80-90 something year old driver turning a Wal-mart, doctors office, or restaurant into a drive-thru, they do not mandate road tests for anybody renewing a valid license. That just wouldn't be PC.

Anyone who has ever suffered true discrimination might have a rather difficult time recognising anything that you described in this as being anything more than a bureaucratic approach to due diligence.
A few tests every four years to maintain the PRIVILEGE of being allowed to drive on public roads would, I'll wager, not be particularly onerous to most.

I wish it were that simple here. Now you hve to appear in person with your birth certificate, your old license and your SS card.

Missouri, nicknamed the ?Show Me State? A name attributed to Representative Willard Van Diver. It conotates a certain self-deprecating stubbornness and devotion to simple common sense.

I renewed my class F in 2010 and it doesn't expire until 2016. I had to do the vision test and road sign test but no driving test, and I was a few years over 55 at the time. I brought all the documents they said I needed and they didn't even want to look at them.

Did you **** someone off at the license office. According to the Missouri department of revenue licenses are good for 6 years, until you hit 70 and then you can only get a 3 year.

Losing the ability to drive is not an experience I look forward to. At 52 I hope I'm decades away but it is very hard to stop somone from driving. Personally I feel as you get up there in age you should be tested more and deeper, just make sence for everyone on the road. Many times I see older folks driving that have no business driving, but they slip through the cracks.

I've lived in Indiana and now I'm in Louisiana. Both states you have to renew every 4 years. I thought that was everywhere. Feel lucky you got 8 years to start with. My class A CDL is $60 for 4 years and a physical every 2 years.

Same here.Unless you have a Hazmat Endorsement then you have to pay the Gov. For alleged background check.

Bubba - you have me MAD now!! How dare you rant and rave when you did not post your birthdate on your profile!!! You can fix that you old fart by following the instructions here http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=568613

Oh and Happy Birthday for whatever darn day it was! Happy_Birthday_Balloon_flight_over_Hertfordshire.jpg

I carry an "enhanced" Class A CDL which is only good for 4 years and it is $108 ($75 for the License, $25 for the "enhancement" and $8 for the motorcycle) so it actually works out to $2.25 per month. Plus my physical too!

Hmmm I have not had that as part of my CDL A and that's a bargain price!!

Since when is that a part of the D.O.T. physical?

It probably is not but perhaps the Dr. likes to administer a free dose of embarrassment with every physical!!

In the wonderful state of Indiana you can renew online. If you go in to the bmv you haft to take the eye test and get a new picture.

I am only 35 so the eye test is not an age thing.
