A couple of questions:

I am in the process of changing my water pump, etc. and in disassembling the two halves of the drive I noted pieces in the upper housing gear area. I have determined these to be a part of Merc #26-96503 (oil seal), spring and rubber. In looking at the schematics it shows two oil seals, the one I just listed and Merc #26-32511. I cannot tell if there is another seal above 26-96503 from looking and I hesitate to tear apart the upper assembly since all appears to be good to go otherwise. No broken splines on the receiving female end, etc. The previous owner did tell me that the pump was just replaced last year but as I have already found issues with some of the mechanical work done I am coming to you guys, as it is possible the one seal 26-32511was never installed.

From the schematics can I assume that both seals are required and are they sort of a sandwich type of placement?

Additionally (I just edited this after watching video - http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...&mid=45006CF75925B323AFBE45006CF75925B323AFBE ), just to confirm as my drive shaft does have the groove for an "O" ring, I do not replace the "O" Ring, leave the groove as is and only replace the seals?

depending on the age , if the upper is not leaking oil you can leave it for the time being. just the lower seal can be replaced without disassembly of the upper unit.

Thanks BT, however what about the second question - use of the O ring and the seal together. In the video at the 4 minute mark is where this guy starts and intimates that Mercruiser does not recommend the use of the O ring if you are using the seal.
