I am looking for a lower unit for my 650 Merc. I see 'em advertised by the driveshaft length. This may be a stupid question, but from what point to what point on the driveshaft are they supposed to be measured? Thanks.

Re: Driveshaft length question.

Its an old pic attached, but the pricinple of measurement still applies.

Vertical distance from transom to anti-ventillation plate above the prop.

Re: Driveshaft length question.

When talking about engine shaft length, they are not talking about the length of shaft they are talking about height of the transom in other words a 15" shaft is for a 15" transom and a 20" or long shaft is for a 20" transom or the approximate distance from the highest part of the clamp bracket to the bottom of the cavitation plate. In other words from engine to engine the actual length of driveshaft it's self varies, explaining why the problem with the actual length of the shaft sticking out of the housing that you are trying to get a answer to is so elusive
