I have a 1984 E6rcrm (6 hp)
Im able to get the lower unit off. But the driveshaft is stuck in power head.
Does anyone know the size and pitch of the screw threads in the end of the shaft. To use a slide hammer on?

Re: Driveshaft prob

You got me, Skagit, If you have the lower unit off and the drive shaft is still in there, that tells me the pinion gear is off too. (Unless you have a two piece drive shaft?) Grab the driveshaft in the middle with a good pair of vice-grips and swat the vice grips with a mallet (gently). When you get the shaft out, clean the splines with a brass wire brush and put on a little grease (for next time). Don't put any grease on the tip top of the shaft.

When it came apart it slid out of that end. Is the pinion grear going to be a big headache to get back on. Or can I just slide it back in?
If it is going to be a big deal I will just take it to a marine guy....A friend, But I dont want to cash in all my freebies.

I may be wrong, but the d/s should just slip back into the g/c. If it does rotate it over and make sure it shifts into both gears.

Many of the small hp driveshafts have a pin thru th top portion of the driveshaft. It must be in a certain position to align with a slot in the flange under the powerhead.
Turn the flywheel and apply a slight bit of downward pressure on the lower unit. If this is one of the pin designs, the lower unit will drop away when the pin aligns wih the slot.

Re: Driveshaft prob

the top of the shaft has 4 grooves and a O ring?...Keep grease in and crap out?
The bottom is splined.
There is a notch in the shaft about 8" from the bottom..Looks like a way to stop it from turning?
Joe, Should the shaft just slide back it lower unit without tearing it apart to.

The shift rod was in nuetral and slid out with lower unit. It just has a notch on the top to fit one way back in.
I was carefull with lower unit, keeping it upright and not spinning the prop.
