'95 E-rude 130. Just wondering guys, there was no water in the LU oil, but do you normally replace the driveshaft oil seal under the waterpump each time you change waterpumps? I have never had an issue and the seal looks okay but I was wondering, since I was in there should I just do it? Just looking for some opinions.

Id like to put the new pump and get it squared back away today, and I dont have the seal handy..............

At 20 years of age and with the driveshaft spinning at 5000 rpm the seals will be worn.---wear is visible using a magnifying glass and comparing to a new seal.----Given the cost of a new gearcase or internal parts a new seal kit is a very good investment !

I am picking up a 1990 motor next week.---Apparently the powerhead is fine and lower unit is trashed.-----Owner opted to spend about $10 K for a new motor.-There are 2 oil seals under the pump one faces the oil the other faces the water.

Thanks for clearing that up Racer. I have removed/installed them in the past. Hopefully I can leave the driveshaft installed to get the old ones out? I know that is not the case with the propshaft seals.

What motor is it. I have 3 functioning lower units laying around.

Guys, help!

I just changed the oil seal in the upper bearing housing and didnt note which way the housing came off. There are two grooves in the housing, and one has a small drain hole in it. If memory serves me right the groove with the hole faces the exhaust housing. Is this correct?

This is the hole I speak of..........

On the 3 cylinder motors that housing is marked with a " front " on the casting.-On the 4 cylinder it is not marked.--Just put that hole close to the hole in the lower unit.---If you check parts book you will see the later motors do not offer the single seal.---Would not trust the all rubber seal when running in cold / cold water !!!!

Thanks for all the support through this guys. I noticed that the newer style waterpump (factory OMC) has a drain hole in it and the original didn't. Is this so that water doesn't freeze up in the pump housing and can drain out? The hole is at the tip of the taper of the water outlet.

In this picture you can see it just above the bolt on the left.

Did I mention that the gearcases on this motor are BEASTS and I have no idea how I got it up by myself!!! Actually I learned a trick from an older fella. Got two bolts the same thread and diameter as the original lower unit bolts, that are 6+ inches long. This allows me to get the LU up, bolt two of the bolts in as I shimmer the LU up to get the shiftshaft, water intake and driveshaft lined up. Worked like a charm but still a BEAR!!!

That hole is a vent to let air out during operation.---Never use bolts to pull a lower unit and exhaust housing together.
