Driveshaft stuck in lower unit 9.9/15

I bought a good used lower unit to repair my 9.9. It was bare - no water pump, drive shaft or anything.
I got everything apart from my trashed old lower but I can not get the driveshaft out of the housing. I thought it was supposed to slide right out with the pump off. I tried putting vice grips on the shaft and tapping with a hammer and it didn't move at all.
I have the water pump off, the key out, shift shaft out etc.
I was thinking of removing the pinion carrier and propshaft but I see it's been tack welded on! I wonder what I'm up against inside...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

use the vise grips as you were,but,get yourself a barbell weight and make a slidehammer .
