Re: driveshaft stuck in powerhead

If you are sure that everything is unhooked and there is a small gap between the lower and mid, then tap in a couple of wooden wedges at the the front and back and see if that pops it loose. You can also just whang the wedges with a sledge and it end up breaking the water pump housing to get the lower end off.
I have head of some hanging the whole motor upside down by the lower end a couple of inches over the (padded) earth to let gravity pull it apart, after squirting a bunch of penetrant down the shaft.
Last resort: Sawzall

Good Luck!

i have dealt with this problem several times with salt water engines. do as the others have said, be sure shift linkage and all bolts are out and loose. youcan take an automotive engine hoist and hook to powerhead. slide a pipe or other solid piece of steel under the hoist legs. chain the lower unit to this pipe and jack up the hoist. when pressure is applied, use a dead blow hammer with a piece of 2x4 for cushion and beat at upper exhaust housing. give it time. i have seen times where you might have to invert engine and pour a lot of penetrating oil between lower unit and exhaust housing. usually just putting pressure on it works. be careful when doing this.

Thanks for all the ideas,a couple of thin chisils did the job.I had it running in a plastic tote with a mixture of salt away and water,I've done this before and it really clens the cooling system, just make shore the water doesn;t get to warm. While it was running it stopped pumping water, when I took the pump housing off the impeller key was missing and the shaft was just turning in the impeller.I've worked as a marine tech for quite a few years and never had this happen before. The key is the wide flat type, where did it go?Paul

Make sure to put the proper grease on the drive shaft splines, and you won't have to repeat this drill.

Re: driveshaft stuck in powerhead

when installing put molly lube on just the splines and do not apply it to the top of the drive shaft because it will create a hydrostatic lock, basically just make sure the top is clean of any debris and grease
