removed the lower unit to change water pump. When i was installing i rotated the shaft clockwise to get the impeller on. as a was about to re-install the lower unit i dropped it while it was about 2-3'' off the ground onto some cardboard.

I couldnt get the spline of the driveshaft to mesh to install the lower. so I checked to see if the driveshaft was rotating as I spun the propeller. It wasnt but the prop was. the drive shaft is now locked. Did the drop maybe jar it into neutral? is the shaft locked in neutral?

should I mesh it by turning the flywheel now? Or do you think I screwed something up by the drop?

the motor is a 85hp 69 selectric if that is needed.

thanks

Re: driveshaft stuck

got to love them electric shift motors, I had to throw one in the dump after I could not even give it away...sounds like something got jarred in there, maybe try connecting the gear case and shifting it back and to out of gear..if that does not work disassemble gear case and see what happened.

I think what sparkieboat is saying is, energize the shift solenoids a fee times tto see if you can get it to default to forward gear.

That g/c should be in forward gear if it's on the bench without any power to and no rotation. If you can't rotate the d/s at this time something is screwed up in the g/c.

Re: driveshaft stuck

yeah, i knew the no power puts it in forward gear so I was concerned. I tried the power to solenoids, with no luck. So then I basically reinstalled the water pump. Turns out the new impeller was just stuck in the case preventing the shaft from spinning. So once I reassembled I couldnt rotate the drive shaft again with the propeller, but two hands in the clockwise position on the driveshaft rotated the prop. So I assumed I was good and reassembled.

Is it normal for the prop to not be able to spin the driveshaft?

I will test out the new impeller tomorrow on the driveway.

thanks for the replies

No. Did you put any lube on the impeller when you installed it ??
