When using an old distributor, the bushings at the top of the distributor and the ones at the bottom hold the shaft centered in the oil pump just fine. It's just for priming with a drill, not running day in and day out at 4000 rpm.

Re: Driving oil pump through distributor

Great discussion -- glad I asked! Yes -- I have done this many times before on Ford racing engines using a discard distributor with the gear, weights, etc removed and spun with a half inch drill. Since I haven't had to deal with Chevies until the boat, I thought that I'd post the question to see if there were any unique issues or things to avoid. For example -- the early Ford big blocks use a hex shaped shaft between the oil pump and the distributor. Would you believe that the only thing that retains the shaft when you pull the distributor is a lousy "E" clip that hits the underside of the block to prevent the shaft from pulling out. Had the misfortune of that clip breaking on two different engines necessitating dropping the oil pans to recover. Thereafter, we always put set screw collars on the shafts when building the engines. So...how are the shafts retained in Chevies when you pull the distributors?

Chevy doesn't have anything to fall down inside the engine like that. The gear is held on with a roll pin. I think it's 3/16"

On a chevy the shaft that drives the oil pump is held onto the pump by a cheap plastic collar about one inch long. Kind of hard to explain. I have not heard of them breaking except when trying to separate the two and trying to reuse it. I've also dealt with the ford shaft dropping. Not fun, darn near ruined a fresh engine.

The tool I made was from a prestolite distributor. I removed the gear, pulled the shaft out and cut the shaft just below the spring bar. I then too the body and cut 1/2" above the flange that sits on the intake. To use, i put the body in the engine, drop the shaft in and rotate it to align with the pump, Attach a 1/2" drill and run the drill clockwise to prime. I usually bar the engine over slowly as I prme it.

Successful engine builders know that externally priming the oiling system of a new engine eliminates dangerous "dry" initial start-up! Our Chevrolet oil pump primer tool features a special bushing that seals the oil galley and completely primes and pressurizes the entire engine oil system. All models feature an upper collar that also prevents oil pump drive side-loading. Use your heavy duty 3/8" drive drill motor to build oil pressure and uniformly distribute oil throughout the engine for initial start-up.
