Driving range... Hitting the long ball.

So I like to go once a week to whack the crap out of some golf balls with my 7 dollar sports authority special Ram brand driver. Just for fun. I maybe play a round of 18 once or twice a year.... i'm terrible.

But my drive has always been.... decent but needing work. I consistantly drive 250.... And that's 150 straight then 100 slicing off to the right. Consistanty.

So last night I was whacking some balls, and the ranges pro comes up to me and introduces himself. He tells me I have power, a decent swing, a stance that needs work and a lousy grip. He tells me how like everybody else they are slow, and offers an hours lesson at half price on the spot. I say sure.

He fixed my grip, completely. He fixed my slice, completely. My swing got better, but he feels I need a custom club with a longer neck because of my height and arm/leg length. I'm tall and all arms and legs. He also feels that with a longer club I can get more power transfer out of my hips, and a more natural stance instead of being hunched over.

Here's the best part. The range is marked 250yrds in 50 yrd increments. The tree line is 310-320, and they are 30 ft high pines. Out of the 100+ balls I hit, I whiffed a few, toed a few, heeled a few, and sent 50+ of them over the tree line, with quite a few of them not even looking like they were dropping yet. :)

Towards the end of the hour I had about 20 people standing behind me all watching and clapping when i crushed one. Man... Talk about pressure. Looks like i'm off to the golf fitter.

A golfer is borne... Any golf store will be able to find you the right size clubs with just a few simple measurements. Most have a net you can hit balls into. Once you get the info you need you can find inexpensive equipment all over the place. Good used clubs are easy to find. If you get caught up in the brand name thing you can easily spend a few thousand on clubs that you can get for a couple of hundred if you look around. Keep getting a few lessons to get the basics down and you'll be good to go. ..Short game lessons are very good to get as well. It's not a game it's an addiction. Have fun.

Man am I jealous!
If I get 220 yards out of my drive I am happy and I have taken half a dozen lessons.

That's great.:) I wish instruction would work on me. Every time someone tries to give me pointers I get worse.:( The best game I ever played was my first time out. To my partner's amazement I hit most of them long and straight. It only went down hill from there though.

Just remember to keep at for a good few weeks, almost every day, so you don't get on the course one day and go.. "Now how are my hands supposed to go? ..and where is my club supposed to face?" Happens to me every time I take time away from golfing (Which is frequently, lately).

I just wish my performance at the driving range had ANY friggin' correlation to my performace on the course....

They say Performance anxiety can really screw up a few different activities.:D If i'm not playing well I just don't keep the score. A few rounds with out the score card and I settle down and my score comes back down as well. Don't forget to add a couple wobbly's before you tee off and the joy of the game seems to come back as well as the better shots. :)

Exactly my experience. I was decent at the beginning and just kept going downhill. Oh well, it's too expensive anyway!

I'm a natural righty. Righty everything except for hockey. I can shoot both ways with the stick. Righty I can absolutely hit harder, but it tends to fly all over the place. Playing lefty I have much more accurate shot wether i'm slapping it or wristing it, and much better puck handleing to. It's fun when league time comes about in october... I'll start games righty for the first 10 minutes then switch to a lefty stick, it throws whoevers on me wayyy off.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm 6'1" and about 290lbs....when I get a hold of one it goes a long way. I can hit 300 on the range, but have only done it ONCE on the course......and it landed 3 fairways over.

I was just invited to a golf tournament the other day and I thought Naaaah I don't want to. Then they asked again," c'mon it's for handicapped and blind kids", then I started to think, maybe I could win this one! :D
