I have an IO now. I use to have an outboard and I could drive trimmed way up in shallow water. I'm concerned about driving with my IO at to much of an angle. Any recommendations?

Re: Driving Trim Up

It's OK to operate the drive trimmed up at idle speed as long as the water inlet is still submerged. If the water inlet is not submerged you'll lose cooling and overheat the engine.

Do not operate above idle when trimmed full up, even on muffs, since it puts excessive strain on the universal joints in your driveline.

It depends on the drive. Some of the old Volvo-Penta drives have tilt only, and are not meant to be driven at any speed with the drive in anything but the full down position, IIRC. I think idle speed would be the max for these.

My drive is an alpha 1 I think. It has a height limiter and a trailer mode. The highest setting before trailer mode still is not very far up.

Re: Driving Trim Up

My owners manual says that if trimmed up beyond the trim range (using the trailer button) to keep rpms below 1200. Mine is a Merc Alpha 1 as well.

While on the trailer, I observed the outdrive position and trimmed up until the outdrive was just level with the keel. Then noted trim gage position for future reference. When i go in shallow water, thats where I position the outdrive, and I keep the rpm at 1000.

I've never hit the bottom once, nor damaged the universal, gimble bearing, etc.

In contrast, "somebody" told my buddy to never go above the trim position so he refuses to do so. He has gone thru more props and lower units than I can remember.

The trim setting is so you can trim it out safely at speed. If you are running full throttle and on calm water you can trim it all the way out and pick up a few mph, the trailed will bring the motor all the way up and should only be done at idle or slow speed etc

Sorry! I read this post without a clear head!, most newer boats will not let you raise the trim more than 50%. "with engine running". from there it is choice? Do I need to turn off engine and raise engine more than that? or raise engine as much as possible with engine running. BOATERS CALL!
