Re: Driving with 4 out of 5 studs

How many people actually look up the torque specs for their wheels?

Well....I do!

I just related my personal experience with a failure. Did I happen to get the bad batch of lugs that along with an over torque condition cause a failure...maybe. Would this happen to you if you did it. Obviously won't happen all the time.

Not sure where you come up with the lubed vs unlubed being only 80%. Guess it is the engineer in me that want to know the actual numbers. Check out the following calculator.

http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/fasteners_torque/index.asp#

The lubed spec is less than half of the unlubed spec.

Read this article for how important it is to use proper torque:

I read a hardware distributor's spec sheet at one point. Lubed vs. unlubed specs for torque were given. I divided the two numbers for a lot of sizes and found the two methods varied by an average difference of about 20-25% less. Felt pretty good about it ever since.:)
