Has anyone looked to the sky and have seen small drones lately?

While coming home yesterday on a stretch of highway just before entering our small city I did see a dron going from north to south...took me by surprise....it may have been 3 feet long....at first from a distance I thought it was a bird of pray and as it came closer saw that it was a small looking plane....and it could not have been anyone flying a remote model plane in this area.

I wonder if it was programmed to recognize the middle digit?

If you shoot at it and it comes back around then you know there's someone on the other end watching:D

Actually unmanned aircraft are being used more and more now ... I got a chance to see some commercial surveillance RCs a few months back that were pretty cool. Civil Air Patrol is even starting to use RC airplanes like unmanned drones for SAR work ( a little bit).

Though, it could have been a military bird on a run of some sort too, I guess.

Re: Drons

More curious, if it is flying over MY property, how high does MY airspace extend?

I could use a laser and burn out its camera, since they are invading MY property without a Warrant.

I meant they were a commercial company selling the unit ... not a government agency contracting a unit. Sorry, that probably wasn't the best way to type it.

It was a very cool gizmo that a fella' here in TN is trying to get patented and then market. 3 dual rotors (think a triangle with small rotors on top and bottom of each point), with a platform in the middle and two skids under (about 2' wide x 2' long total). He had a camera rig mounted from the bottom feeding to a receiver on his flight controller. Unlike a typical drone, this one would move on any axis (x, y or z) like a helicopter but was EASY to control.

There was another unit similar to this one, but not quite as nicely done.

He's a little late patenting it.

There are a ton of these out there. Here is one example:

I was in a bicycle event this weekend where they were filming the start of the event from above with a quad rotor RC helicopter.

A popular commercial use for them is by real estate agencies advertising high end real estate. They either get high res still captures or video.

I had heard that there are already legal wheels, in motion, to address privacy issues, with drone use.

Stay tuned.

Re: Drons

Nothing science fictions about drone use anymore.

It's the wave of the future, sooner, than later.

Security surveillance, crop and power line inspections, delivery of auto parts, only the beginning. Some are so light they can run off solar power and hover at high altitudes for months.

The FAA is looking at some type of traffic control technology, to keep them from crashing into each other.

A guy on the radio recently purchased a "remote control helicopter".

It's not "old school", since it implements GPS coordinates to to fly to a specific location, will land itself when it runs low on fuel and will automatically return and land at it's home base, with the press of a button. It can use a video camera, which will send live video back to the base.

$2,000.00

They're coming.

Why you think that it was not a RC plane, drone style or jet? I fly RC and they can get out to quite a far distance, as far as your eyes can see is pretty much the distance limitation. It is amazing what's available now days. I have a electric powered jet that can hit 100 mph on a good day.
