Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

Never had to resort to it but it does work especially for suspended fish.
Derwood unlike normal worm fishing (plastic) where the weight is in front of the worm you tie on your hook leaving a length of "tag" line which then becoms the dropper for a split shot or casting sinker. You then have a worm say 3 feet off the bottom and you sort of hop it up and down. It is like a fishfinder rig in salt water only single hooked and you use a plastic worm. I bet it would work using a curly tail grub in a hole in S/W you may want to try it.

Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

Yea, your right,

It's kinda like a reverse zaa-bee-daa grubb on a bobber kinda thing....without the bobber.

Heck....you could do a bunch of stuff with that getup.

I see a white jerk bait on a butterfly loop bout 1 1/2ft up from a 1/4 ounce barrel weight in the turtle grass.

Even a very slowly retrived live bait sounds like a killer. i don't retrive with the fish finder style getup.

A grubb would do nicely with that....mabye with a super small split shot in the nose for just a hairs worth of dive weight....nice and slooooowww.

This could also be my chance to try the new florocarban line for my leader....hhhmmmmmm.

Can you smell the gears burning  (sometimes thinking gets me in trouble)

Thanks for the new gung fu...i'll call it "dog on carpet style gung fu" (you know ...when they drag their a$$ on the carpet) :D

derwood.

If you guys would speak (write) plain English maybe I could figure out what the heck you are talking about.

What PFB wrote made a bit of sense. But then you retreated into mumbo jumbo jargon again.

Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

Well JB...that may take some backpost reading.

If you go back in time and read the "removing a hook from your person" post and then read the "blind fishing" post it will help you to get the joke.

As for the curse part...i think it is under the....you may have to serch for " beware all ye fisherman". I think that should take you to the curse post.

Read the "bridge pic test post"...you may get something in the mail soon. :D

derwood.

Anyway, thats where all of the gung fu stuff came from.

I seem to have aquired a curse...its best if you spin around 3 times in your computer chair and toss some splitshots over your left shoulder after reading one of my posts so you don't catch any bad luck....better safe than sorry. :D

JB, derwood is just kidding around, using fabricated terms based on the 70's tv series "Kung Fu" :)

it sure makes for some good yarns and entertainment here... ahem - that is, other than the great knowledge we all seek to gather.

------------------------------------------------

I know JB has a good sense of humor, because when i first got in here, he was telling funny stories along with 12footer and SSMayfloat, and using phrases like "OH GAWD!" .... but maybe all the load of a zillion new questions is overtaxing his time. :(

BTW (Ross & instigaderwood-that means ByTheWay):
The drop-shot I've used and was explained to me by a B.A.S.S. pro was not really using a tag end, but just tying the lure (worm, jig, nightcrawler) right off a loop a variable length up from the sliding sinker at end of line. dang, i can't remember the knot name - one of those where you run loop thru eye, then granny knot, then pull hook back thru loop. (i normally use the uniknot, so i don't recall many fishing knot names)

Hmmmm.

I just wanted to get a clear explanation of what "drop shot" fishing is. I think I understand it now.

Yes, Derwood, your stories and ramblings are a lot easier to read lately. They still don't make sense :D but at least I can read them now.

Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

I was thinking it would be good for the suppended fish. Here lately at one of the lakes I have been fishing the fish are suppending on dropoffs about 12-15' deep. Mid-day when the surface water temps reach the low 90's is when the fish more deeper and suppend.

I have been catching them with crankbaits but I am looking for a new "Tool" to catch the suppended fish. Mo tools Mo Better. lol :D

Ebbtide176 the knot you were talking about is a palamar knot. This is a strong knot for mono line.

Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

The Michigan DNR fishing regs state that it is illegal to "have a weight suspended below any hook UNLESS the hook is on a dropper line (leader) at least 3" long". Here we have to attach the weight to the end of the line, and then attach a separate 3"+ leader above it for the hook. I believe the tag end method would be illegal here. (?)

PJ57 I think you are right. Ithink I seen an artical about dropshot fishing and it brought up the law in Michigan. Humm I wonder what the reason is for the law.

Tight Lines and Solid Hooksets :D

Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

bKelly, I'm not positive, but I believe it is to discourage "snagging". We've got "fishermen" around here that attach a big weight to the end of the line and a hook (even a treble hook) immediately above it. Then without bait, toss it over the back of some spawning steelhead, snag it, and drag it to shore. Sporting, huh? By requiring the weight above the hook and a minimum 3" leader to the hook, I guess it makes it a wee bit harder to snag. It's also illegal (for the same reason, I think) to have a weight attached immediately above a treble hook (don't know the minimum distance required from weight to hook), and to fish with a bare hook.

Re: Drop Shot bass fishing

This is the wording of the Mi. regulation regarding the drop line, taken from the 2002 Fishing Regulation Book.
It is illegal to "have a weight rigidly attached to a multi-pointed hook; or suspended from a multi-point hook; or suspended below any hook unless the hook is on a dropper line (a leader) that is at least 3" long."
From what I understand it is in place to stop that aforementioned practice of "snagging." It is also against the law to keep any fish not caught in the mouth in all Michigan waters.
I, if it were legal, would definitel like to try this method. It would work great in several of the areas I fish.
