Looks like you are on the right track, i couldn't tell to much from the pic, look for a plate with 2 screws holding it on, on the lower housing starbord side if you find one take the screws out and you will find the shift rod in there with a bolt through it, that later model motor may come loose where the pic shows. I was looking at the bend in the rod right under the bolt, it may make it a little hard to get through the housing, also when you reassemble make sure you hook up the water tube. Hope this helps.

ok, it's been a good 30 minutes and still holding @ 19PSI. is it also necessary to a vacuum test or does the pressure test do it

thanks bass runner the shift rod does disconnect from under the powerhead and there's 2 rubber stoppers that hold it in line and the shaft which holds the rod is wide enough so that the rod even the bent part slides right through the housing and out i just wanna make sure i'm doing the test right and that i have the L/U submerged to the right depth and as i said in my last post it's submerged right to the top of the impeller housing and shift rod cover.

If it's holding that much pressure that long don't worry about it, it should be fine, make sure you hook up the water tube when you put it back together, grab the beer and head for the lake. :D

i'll grab the beer only because i've just about had enough of this bleeping boat so i won't be taking it to the lake just yet. i was hesitant in doing this (very little grease monkey knowledge) and i will follow with my reasoning. seams the L/U was fine so i didn't need to take it off the leak came from a faulty gauge on the pump not from the L/U.i did need to test it because i replaced the drive shaft seals but i didn't have to remove it. second reason is that in replacing the retainers and anode i striped the threads from inside the drive shaft housing (fn aluminum) oh and now the prop wont spin
