I need help on changing my impellar on a 2001 150hp 2 stroke mercury . I get all the way to drop the lower unit and found a cable coming out with the lower unit and need to know what this cable is and how to dis connect so I can drop the lower unit all the way to replace my water pump and impellar.

Is it a cable or a speedometer pick up hose Do you have a picture? If it is in the front section of the LU it may be the hose for the speedo. Not sure of what type of mechanism your engine uses for this function.

It has to be the speedo hose. If you look just above the lower unit, you will see the hose exit the housing, there is a hose barb that you unplug the hose at. There is a cable there but it doesn't connect to the lower gearhousing.

This subject has been addressed previously and it turned out to be the speedometer p/u tube. My 90 3 cyl uses a fixed set of connectors for the function but apparently the 150 and maybe higher use the plastic hose that routs up and out of the engine. I can't tell you the best way to get it off and back on. Maybe heat. On mine, farther up the engine where the tube leaves the engine and gets routed in with the wiring harness there is a connection and it has no clamp and the tube is highly deformed.....like it was heat shrunk to fit the connector. Water pressure isn't all that much, 10# maybe, but you still need to ensure it will remain reconnected. Other thing is that the hose having some age to it may not form over the connector properly if you just cut it off and reattach.

Surely on of the mechanics on here can advise you.

Thanks for the help. I have a metal connector of some sort but I can't figure out how to separate. I will take a picture and send with my next thread. If someone knows what I am talking about please respond.
Thanks

I have been trying to send a picture of the fitting I'm talking about. Hope this works.

Let's go back to a few days ago. My 90 has the same connector but it doesn't have to be disconnected. When you drop my lower unit there is a built in connection in the castings that opens on it's own. You don't have to mess with the hose.

Why not back the LU mounting hardware off so that you can drop it 1/2" or so. Look at the very front of the LU where it separated from the mid section and see if you don't see something that looks like an alignment pin, about 1/4" in diameter. On my engine, that pin is hollow, unlike the one at the rear of the LU, and that is where the water is transferred from the LU to the midsection where the hose is located.

I haven't disconnected that sized LU but I can't imagine them putting a hose in there just flopping around such that you would have to disconnect it where you are looking to allow for dropping the LU.

The tubing was speedometer tube. Thanks for the help. I replaced the Impeller and Thermostats and now the motor has water coming from the upper exhaust hole, is this normal.

Absolutely normal. This is the exhaust relief port (which expels exhaust and cooling water that cooled it) that helps starting/running when the thru prop exhaust is under water like you have it in pic #1. If you didn't have it before it may have been because you needed a new impeller to get adequate water flow through the engine.

Does this look like the type of connectors you have, items 32/36 and hose, 35.

Mercury & Mercruiser Parts, Swivel Bracket and Steering Arm, 135/140/150/200/XR6/MAGNUM III/140JET (2.5L)(CARB)

They are probably a compression fitting and I would imagine they twist on/off

Scroll down to 32, double click on it, the double click again to blow it up.

Gerry

Gerry,

Just so you know that is a push to connect fitting. you simply push the tube in until it bottoms out and give a slight tug to ensure it has seated. to disconnect it you push in the smaller ends that will free spin, push the tube in then back out. It should come free at that point. Im not a motor mechanic, but I use those in plumbing, they are quite popular with plastic tubing.
