Dropping Transmission pan - question

Not too long ago I bought a $400 2002 Focus wagon from my neighbor that was having overdrive problems. All indications point to a solenoid inside the transmission and I am preparing to replace it. In order to replace it I need to drop the transmission pan. My basic question is, do I just replace the gasket on reassembly or do I need to use a bead of gasket sealer? If I put a bead on, does that go on both side of the gasket??

Pretty basic, but I just want to do this once.

If this works, I got a steal of a deal. $400 plus $40 for the solenoid, $35 for a replacement hood from the junkyard, and about $100 for new brakes. Other than that it runs and looks great. With my daughter driving, $500 is about all I want to spend. I have already learned a lot of bodywork tricks due to her incidental vehicle to vehicle contact.

Do you happen to know if there is special trans fluid for this? I plan on replacing the filter while I am in there as well..

Re: Dropping Transmission pan - question

I have used some 3M Yellow Weatherstrip Contact Adhesive to glue the cork gasket to the pan...keeps gasket from moving/oozing/sliding around when you tighten those bolts....but you can try it either way. The larger washers under the head of each bolt spreads the load and prevents bolts from deforming your pan as they are tightened.

Re: Dropping Transmission pan - question

Did it this weekend. Used the Cork gasket naked and no leaky leaky.. Installed the solenoids and the tranny shifts great. I didn't even make a mess. Probably the cheapest transmission fix there is.
