Someone had to start it
'Bout 15 years ago I had 1 15' trihull that ended uo on a tandem axle trailer. I had it sold and decided to be a nice guy and out in all new fule lines. The boat was at the top of my very steep 250 ft long driveway, trailer chocked. I was working away and dropped a screwdriver in the bilge. Crawled down there to get it and "the earth moved" Stuck my head up over the gunnel and Oh ___T we are rolling down the driveway. I threw my not unconsequential weight against the side of the boat hoping to steer it elsewhere. Yup, now it's going down the yard, which is steeper than the driveway. This is really going to suck! I bailed out and dislocated my shoulder when I landed. The boat went stern first down to the lowest part of the yard, the motor dug in and the boat was, as they say in the good book, split asunder. Pushed the motor up between the seats. Boat split in half. Motor lower unit split. Trailer still OK... Hello Prudential? The insurance guy about peed his pants when he came to take the pictures. OK, who's next???

Re: Dry land boat mishaps

I know what that ride down your driveway felt like.

I towed a jet boat in when he got the ski rope caught up in the jet. I parked my boat on the dock (Opposite side of the ramp). He put the boat almost all the way on the trailer so he could get under and clean out the pump. When he was finished he asked if I wanted to go for a ride, so I climbed in with the other 4 people. He pulls up the ramp to straighten out and starts down. About 9-10ft down he steps on the brake and the trailer pops off the ball on the van and down we go. I hear the toungue of the trailer hit the pavement and look up to see the van a long way from us, so I turn around and we are going to hit the water pretty hard. When we hit, the trailere stopps, but the boat keeps going (Stern up). Well, as we slow down, the stern drops and the lake rushes in. The other people start climbing, walking, crawling up to the bow, I end up sitting on the very front, with at theis time is only about 3-5" above the lake, so much for keeping my jeans dry. Never have rode in a boat down the ramp since.

Craig

That was fun, Daddy, can we do it again? :D :D

My 14 year old daughter asked me last weekend, "if I wear a helmet, can I ride in the boat on the way to the lake?"

New chocks, new house, new boat, new motot, new trailer. That boat was cursed. First year I had it I was 100 miles from home with my dad at a fishing derby. The trailer popped a major weld or something and humped up like a freakin pretzel. Had to limp to the water. leave my dad fishing in the boat, drive back home, see the insurance guy, buy another trailer, drive back and there was my dad, stuck on a sand bar. Following year, cruising one evening and BANG - yup, comin out party for a connecting rod. then the infamous driveway regatta. If I was out of the city limits I'd have burned it and peed on the ashes!!

I don't think mine beats that, but I have a good one.

Last July we had our boat parked in the street in front of our house anticipating taking to the lake for a long weekend the next morning. It was parked "off the road" on the shoulder.

About a mile down the street a couple college aged kids were drinking a "few beers" when one talked another into giving him a ride home. "Home" was a few houses up from us.

They probably would never have have called any attention to themselves had the driver not decided to change the station on the radio as he was passing my house. That explains the loud bang at 1am when he plowed his little red car into the back of our boat.

The boat was knocked off the trailer (through and over the bow winch) and wound up sitting smack in the middle of the front yard facing the house. Needless to say it was a long night, and we never got to the lake that weekend.

You can see a pic of the crash here:
Boatpics

Just scroll down the names then click on mine, it's second from last.

-W
