hi,,
the dsc radio sends a maritime mobile service id number. (mmsid) and the lat/lon. automatically when a distress call is made.
my owners manual doesnt indicate if it is a built in number. or an assigned number as in a tax id/or license number to be applied for.

any body know?

You can get them for free from the Boat US web site ( http://www.boatus.com/mmsi/ )or from the Sea Tow web site ( http://www.seatow.com/boatingsafety/mmsiregistration.htm ). The alternative is to go to the FCC where one will cost you - about $125 the last time I looked.

It takes about 3 minutes to get one, no cost, but they will ask (as I recall) for some information about your radio, like its serial number if I remember correctly. I have no idea why they would need that, and maybe they aren't even asking for it anymore. Anyway its easy to get one. Once you have it let me suggest this, put a length of masking tape across the back of the case of your radio and write the number on it. They are easy to forget and you might want to share it with someone else for ship's station calls.

Thom
