Re: DT140 - not running - trashed fuel pump?? (SOLVED!!)

Thanks to rustyriver for reminding me to give an update on this.

I gave in and handed it over to a shop and now she run like a champ.

Seems to all have originated with the failure of the low pressure pump. As indicated above, when the pump failed the check valve separated. As others cautioned above, I needed to clean the lines and filters to make sure all the pieces were cleaned out, which I did. I pulled all filters and lines and cleaned and blew them out. I also removed the VST and inspected the tank and to see if the needle was moving properly (the mistake). Also, had the injectors sent out to be cleaned and serviced.

Problem persisted so I attempted to check the pressure at the injector rail during the issue. By my tests, I never dropped pressure. Looks like my test were wrong somehow.

The shop checked the pressure and after a couple of attempts, the pressure eventually did drop. They pulled the fuel system apart. Line and filters all clean. Pumps all ok. VST tank clean...BUT the one remaining piece of check valve from the low pressure pump that I couldn't find had migrated from the low pump and into the seat of the VST needle valve obstructing the flow. Enough flow so that it would fill the tank and the engine would crank and idle fine. But when high throttle applied, the needle wouldn't allow enough fuel to flow, the tank would drain and the engine die. Allow it to sit, tank would slowly refill and everything starts all over.

I did not pull the needle apart when I pulled the VST. Just noted that it was moving up and down freely. My mistake.

Anyways, that's the rest of the story. Thanks a ton for everyone who gave advice and helped. Yall got me there.

Love it when the resolution to a problem is posted. So many times folks sign up, log on, ask for advice, and that's it. What fixed it??? Thanks for taking the time to wrap this one up. Now someone may truly learn something.

I may have learned something here, am having very similer problems with my DT90. Will go back and try a few things mentioned above, see if I can get to the bootom of my issue. Thanks for the follow up.

I know I'm digging up an old thread here but I had a similar issue on my 1998 dt115 EFI. Followed what you said here and guess what I found? A piece of the clear plastic diaphragm blocking fuel flow into the VST. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS INFO!!!
