Hello, I have a 1991 Suzuki DT30 and it has been a great engine for most of its life but unfortunately I have not had the time recently to take it out on the water much the past few years. This inactivity has definitely affected its normal reliability.

I thought it would just need a simple carb cleaning to get it back on its feet but after disassembling the carbs and cleaning out the jets with compressed air and carb cleaner, it still has its performance issues. After reading a few posts, I'm thinking about purchasing the rebuild kits and going back into the carbs and replacing the needle valves as well as the gaskets and seals.

Also, I noticed the last time I took the carbs apart that the small black rubber "cap" that attaches to the base of the stem that extends down into the fuel bowl seemed somewhat loose. I thought the last time I took the carbs apart the cap was much more snug. Maybe a result of old age and/or occasional shots of ethanol. Could the loose caps be the source of my troubles or would it more likely be the needle valves sticking?

FYI,,,I checked the compression and fortunately its a solid 135 across the 3 cylinders.

I also replaced the fuel pump as #3 plug was wetter than the other 2 after cleaning the carbs. There was a small hole in the diaphragm so I thought I had the issue fixed. Unfortunately it persists.

Other than going back into the carbs with the kits, is there anything else you'd reccomend?

Thanks very much.

Not sure if the kits are needed, but definitely need to pull carbs apart and clean properly.
Spraying cleaner may not get it done.

Might check the peak voltages to make sure spark is proper and see if timing is in spec

I was finally able to work on the engine last weekend. I installed a carb repair kit which included all new gaskets, floats, needle valves and seats. She is now running like her old dependable self. If anyone has the same symptoms I'd recommend going that route.
