DT60-no power underway

I have an '84 Suzuki DT60. It has been in the family since about 1990 on a pontoon boat. A few years back my father decided it was too noisy and bought a 4-stoke Yamaha 70 to replace it. We ran it out of fuel and pulled the Suzuki and stored it upright in the shipping stand in a barn. This year I sold it for him and helped install it on a different boat. Fresh plugs, gas, and fresh oil in the oil reservior. Starts and idles fine. Revs like a champ in neutral, but has no power at speed-it just bogs down. I pumped the fuel bulb while underway and it is rock hard, no difference in performance. No gas coming out the vents in the carbs. I am a pretty good automotive mechanic, but I don't exactly know where to turn here. What should I look for? I believe it to be an ignition problem of some sort, but is there a module I should look at? Coils? Pickup? I need a bit of help so I can complete the sale. It has been a great motor and we have another DT75 that was bought new in 1986 and in 24 years has only needed a fuel pump and a starter rebuild other than maintenance. Thank you for any advice.

I doubt it's an electrical issue unless a barn mouse has been chewing on your wiring. I would thoroughly clean the carbs. Running the motor to drain the carbs will not completely empty the bowls, better to use the brass drain plugs for long time storage.

No, the wiring is still fine. I'll take the carbs off and clean them. I am just puzzled why it starts and idles so well if it was a fuel issue.

Check out the throttle advance linkage, located at top of power head; below flywheel.

The linage should change position when engaged in gear and as you increase the throttle respond accordingly.

Where you live? If you can?t sell this motor let me know, I have been hunting for just this motor.

Good luck.

I will check the linkage as suggested, that sounds plausible. I live in Chattanooga, TN. I may be ready to do something soon. I sold it to someone I know and he won't be satisfied unless it is almost perfect-and soon. It can't be much wrong, I just don't have experience diagnosing outboard motors. I think it is igintion related-but I don't want to just throw a bunch of parts at it. It starts well, idles well, revs well-it just has no guts when you get into it, but it doesn't die, it just bogs. Is there a diagnosis tree for ignition sytems out there? I will clean the carbs as suggested above, but I just don't feel in my gut that it is that.

Browns Point Marine (Google it) has a parts blow up for your motor, I don?t think it is detailed enough to trouble shoot the electrical

You other option is to purchase on E-baby a Suzuki shop manual specific to your motor, mine cost $ 15 + shipping. It is definitely worth it. It provides both electrical & fuel system blow ups.

I understand your wanting to off load your motor and don?t want the hassle of picking up a manual but there is a big $$$ difference between a motor that?s running and one that?s not.

P.S

When you clean the carb?s be sure to balance them, Synchronize the top with the bottom using the intake manifold connecting the two.

Search out linc & sync on this forum you?ll find additional information

Followup-it was indeed a dirty bottom carb. Cleaned both carbs and it ran like a champ. Thanks for the help!
