Re: Dual Battery Set up

Excellent.

Most people I have spoken with recommend the VSR and say its well worth the 100$. Once i have this set up I will let you all know if its worth it.

Next Question is The Trim solenoid is currently connected to Battery 1 should I leave it there or put it on the Feed of my switch?

For those that have a VSR do you leave the swicth on 1 all the time or start and 1 then switch to both?

Thanks
Greg

Re: Dual Battery Set up

Hi Fed

Why is the schematic flawed? please elaborate.

As well the local boat yard here says its perfectly fine to use a VSR and a Switch.

I was told start on Battery 1 then switch to all and the VSR will take care of the charging of both batteries and when stopped it will drop the starting battery when it falls below 12 V to ensure you will not drain your starting battery when you need it.

Thanks

Whoever told you that should not be giving electrical advice. If there's a manual switch and it is set to connect the two batteries together, they will both be drained if accessories are being used and the alternator is not charging.

The VSR is nothing more than an automatic dual battery switch. You don't need both.

Its not rocket science but it is also easy to forget to switch it back. We are talking $100 for the VSR. It makes it so simple. Have had mine for 10 years and can't believe I used to go through that switch hassle, especially on week long camping trips to the lake.

I agree. Humans forget, a VSR does not.

You still don't understand what the VSR does.

With a VSR installed, the only time you would switch to "both" is if your starting battery fails.

Leave the trim on the starting battery. All the "engine" stuff connects to the starting battery, all the other stuff connects to the second or "house" (that's what it's called) battery. That would be the feed to your distribution panel for radios, lights, refrigerator, whatever that's not part of making the boat go.

And don't forget circuit protection within seven inches of the battery or switch post for the circuit to the distribution panel.

Thanks I plan to use a 20 Amp fuse from the Common on the switch to the distrubution.?

So its best to leave the trim connected to the Starting battery (Batt 1).

So with the VSR I can just leave the switch on 1, all the time ( except when I am done for the day then Off) and the VSR will do the switching automatically.

Yes.

As far as the trim goes, the power to it is likely already is in its proper place and with its proper fuse/breaker
